I resolved to tell the world how, in defiance of all my family's attempts to bring me up properly and all the warnings and advice of my friends, I had brought myself to this present wretched state, in which, having frittered away half a lifetime, I find myself without a single skill with which I could earn a decent living. There and then I resolved to make a record of all the recollections of those days I could muster – those golden days when I dressed in silk and ate delicately, when we still nestled in the protecting shadow of the Ancestors and Heaven still smiled on us. The realization brought with it an overpowering sense of shame and remorse, and for a while I was plunged in the deepest despair. As I went over them one by one, examining and comparing them in my mind's eye, it suddenly came over me that those slips of girls – which is all they were then – were in every way, both morally and intellectually, superior to the 'grave and mustachioed signior' I am now supposed to have become. Having made an utter failure of my life, I found myself one day, in the midst of my poverty and wretchedness, thinking about the female companions of my youth.

We all know that the Harts were, as one psychic medium so insightfully noted, not a normal American family, but thanks to Diana’s book, the Harts and their extended families are the most despicable band of lost souls in the history of Western literature. Printed after her divorce from Davey Boy Smith but before The British Bulldog’s death, Diana Hart’s autobiography contains not so much her life story as a non-stop barrage of insane allegations and third-hand stories presented as fact. As you’ll see, however, the actual Under The Mat is a lot less light-hearted and way more full of crap than anyone could imagine. One might expect to hear funny stories about the time the nWo’s toilet bucket tipped over during a show and everyone in hiding had to flee to one corner. When a wrestling fan hears the book title, Under The Mat, he or she (probably he) most likely assumes it to be about the shenanigans that happen when wrestlers hide beneath the ring to do surprise run-ins. I found Toby, the central character, very selfish and unappreciative of the help his parents were giving him when he was in the hospital. I think it is a long wait for a reader to like any book. And true to her words, it doesn’t get interesting until we get Chapter Five, around 160 pages into the book. Some of the chapters were really boring to read, yet I continued on as my friend did say it gets interesting. The book started a drag for me, with so much of droning going on and on about Toby, his friends, his girlfriend, cousins and family and the aftermath of attack on him. So I had to use a lot of Google's help to figure out them, although a few I could understand based on their usage in the sentences. In the sense that when French is giving a scene, suddenly she goes into a past scene in between the sentences causing a chaos in reader's mind to go back and forth without a thread to follow.įrench being from Irish descent used a lot of words that are more common to Irish English rather than what we use normally. However, the sentences all are so jumbled up. The story is written in first-person narration. Little does he know that his stay there would be anything but peaceful and recuperating, digging up old murder and forgotten memories. I kept that in mind going into Malice since a debut novel needs to be anticipated with a different level of expectations. By that point, he has established himself as a proven author, known for his brutal and viscerally detailed battles, and has grown much over his career. Unlike many, my introduction with John Gwynne began with The Shadow of the Gods, his 8th novel. John Gwynne managed to do this very well for a debut author. I found no such fault with Malice, though I've perhaps been conditioned too well by a certain Brandon Sanderson for me to ever have issues with a slow-burn pacing to start, provided there's payoffs by the end. One of the most common complaints I've seen from other readers is that there are too many characters named and introduced and too much going on that bogs down the first half of the book. All of it happens with characters easy to love, or hate, and a great deal of depth to them. Malice is a fantastic debut novel that delivers much of what it promises, bloody good action, mystical creatures, eerie antagonists, and political machinations. I am very excited to read more Gwynne after his amazing The Shadow of the Gods novel. My goal this year is to get through all 7 Banished Lands books (as well as Bloodsworn Saga #2). Here is a long review of Malice I posted on Goodreads. Patrick dies in the cold: Henri falls in love with Villanelle, whose marriage to the fat gambler (as well as a previous love affair with a queenlike Venetian matron) causes trouble for both of them once they reach Villanelle's old home. In Russia, she and Henri meet as the French army is collapsing and the Russian countryside is erupting in flames with Patrick, a wildly visionary defrocked Irish priest, they flee, making their way back to Venice. Three of four sections of this slim, crisp, dreamy novel are narrated by Henri, a young French foot-soldier whom Napoleon chooses over a fat cook one fateful day in 1805 to be the keeper of his personal larders as the French army begins its forced march east to the ""zero"" Russian winter of defeat: the third section is told by Villanelle, a cardsharp in conquered Venice whose marriage to (and betrayal of) a grotesquely fat, sinister foreign gambler ends in her being sold to Napoleon's officer corps as a traveling whore. An exhilarating tale of lust, love and magical transformations of the heart during ten years of the Napoleonic Wars, first published in England in 1987. The book was made into an unwatchable 1980 feature film starring Jason Robards. Pitt is tasked with bringing the remains of the great ship back to the surface in one piece, but as success draws nearer, dark forces are closing in. The book, published long before Robert Ballard discovered the real resting place of the Titanic, was an unqualified success, in part because interest in the Titanic disaster never wanes. He may never have become so popular if not for “Raise the Titanic,” a 1976 novel that introduced most readers to Pitt and launched Cussler's career. These days, Cussler's portrayals of chivalry seem outdated and perhaps offensive, but he continues to churn out books, maintaining a consistent presence on the best-seller lists. He has written or co-authored 62 books, many of them thrillers focusing on Dirk Pitt, a darkly handsome, unstoppable hero who is something like an unlicensed James Bond. By now, readers know what to expect from Clive Cussler. Beagle, until a real lawyer from New York named Beagle contacted NBC and threatened to file a lawsuit unless the name was dropped.
